CT Imaging (Computed Tomography Imaging)

Diagnostic CT imaging, or computed tomography (CT) scanning, is a medical imaging technique that uses X-rays and computer processing to create detailed cross-sectional images of the body. It provides more detailed information than standard X-rays by capturing multiple images from different angles and combining them into a three-dimensional representation. Sound Cancer Care uses combination PET/CT imaging. Unlike other centers, our PET and CT scans can be done at the same time. Resulting in most accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.

How CT Imaging Works:

The CT scanner is a doughnut shaped machine that can take images within a few minutes. One section of the CT scanner emits X-rays that pass through the body. Detectors on the opposite side of the scanner measure the X-rays that pass through. A computer reconstructs the captured data into cross-sectional images known as “slices”. Multiple slices can be combined to create detailed 3D images of internal structures.

Uses of CT Scans:

Diagnostic CT scans are often the part of the early process for cancer diagnoses. They can be used in conjunction with contrast injection or PET imaging to highlight specific tumor areas. CT imaging is also used to track cancer treatment progression as well as follow up imaging after treatment.

A CT Simulation is often performed before radiation therapy begins. This entails the patient be positioned in the same way they would be for treatment. Specific parameters, devices, and techniques are used for these types of scans. The simulation scan, as well as other previous scans, are utilized to plan radiation therapy treatment.
