HIGH ENERGY
PRECISION TO THE MILLIMETER
Radiation therapy is a highly effective treatment that uses controlled doses of high-energy radiation to target and destroy cancer cells. It works by damaging the DNA of cancer cells, preventing them from growing and spreading. As a base, cancer cells are more sensitive to radiation than normal cells.
There are different types of radiation therapy. At Sound Cancer Care we use external beam radiation therapy and brachytherapy. Carefully planned by medical experts, radiation therapy is a precise and effective treatment. Your treatment is designed to maximize destruction to cancer cells while minimizing harm to healthy tissues.
GUIDED TREATMENT
The Importance of CT Imaging
CT imaging is essential in radiation therapy, providing precise 3D visualization of tumors to ensure accurate targeting while minimizing damage to healthy tissues. It aids in tumor localization, treatment planning, and radiation dose calculation, allowing for personalized therapy. Advanced techniques like IMRT, IGRT, and stereotactic radiotherapy rely on CT scans for precision. Additionally, CT imaging monitors tumor response during treatment, enabling adjustments for better outcomes. By enhancing accuracy and reducing side effects, CT imaging plays a crucial role in optimizing radiation therapy for cancer patients.
Personalized Cancer Care
-
A Team Of Providers
Our radiation oncologists will work with your other providers to determine if radiation therapy is the best method of treatment for you. Considerations such as chemotherapy or immunotherapy are accounted for.
-
Planning Your Treatment
Once radiation treatment is confirmed, you will receive any imaging needed for treatment planning. This often includes a CT scan called a “simulation” and possible PET imaging. A treatment planning team comprising of a radiation oncologist, physicist, and dosimetrist will create your radiation treatment plan off of these scans.
-
Treatment Itself
There are many checks and quality assurance processes that take place before you begin treatment. Each treatment is dictated by a total dose of radiation. This dose is segmented out into multiple sessions of treatments, usually divided out by days. The amount of sessions is decided by the effectiveness, patient status, and possible side effects. All accumulating to ensure you have the best possible outcome from treatment.
